  • 3 Rivers Outdoor Co. 1130 South Braddock AvenuePittsburgh, PA, 15218

Check out 3 Rivers Outdoor Co event webpage for more registration info and cost.

Spring migration is the best time for bird watching and we’re fortunate that Frick Park is a great area for birding — right in our backyard! Join local environmental health scientist Kimberly Garrett, PhD for an introduction to birding to identify birds by sight and sound in our local woods. Kimberly is a former docent at the National Aviary and recently finished her PhD at Pitt.

Here are some common species we'll likely see and hear:

Red-tailed Hawk
Red-bellied, downy, hairy, and pileated woodpeckers
White-breasted nuthatch
Blue jay
Carolina wren
Song sparrow
American robin
American goldfinch
Northern cardinal

There is also a chance we'll see the Barred and Eastern screech owls that hang out near the Hutchinson parking lot and on Falls Ravine. Some of the spring migrants might be there, including eastern towhee, hermit thrush, and red-winged blackbird.

Where: Meet at 3ROC and walk together to Frick

Activity Level: Easy-Moderate

Equipment: Sturdy hiking shoes, water. Binoculars may be helpful, but are not required. We’ll have an extra pair or two to share.

Adopting the motto "Research, Education, and Adventure" in 1947, for three generations the ECP has provided the opportunity to learn new skills and meet new friends who share a willingness to accept the physical and mental challenges of outdoor exploration and adventure.
